Grab some wheels and get out of town

What better way to see the countryside and enjoy the best transportation system in The Netherlands? We borrowed Cat and René’s bikes (what good friends!) and cycled down their lane to the bike path along the canal. With a quick left turn, we headed south.

The weather cooperated with a perfect autumn day, and in minutes we were leaving the city behind us.

We cruised at a speed at which we could take in the scenery and were amused when two, even-more-elderly-than-us women passed us. No matter!

We enjoyed our afternoon ride in the countryside. For travellers like us, who venture forth often and in unfamiliar territory, it’s reassuring to know we’d have lots to see and we wouldn’t get lost in The Netherlands.

All the cousins have been peeking in on your latest travels. Eileen: “they are wonderful photographers and journalers!!”, Peggy/Margaret: “OMG. Just spent about 20 minutes scrolling through the entire trip from August 5! What an incredible journey.” Jim: Entrancing. I couldn’t stop! Beth and Joe provide an entertaining narrative. I also enjoyed the great pictures, well composed and well curated.” Maryanne: “It’s always good to see how much fun those two are having opening themselves up to all kinds of surprises. Fred and I love to look at pics of our travels, but Beth and Joe are doing that on a huge scale by sharing with all their friends and family!” Beth and Joe, I loved today’s art….you inspire us all to get traveling. Keep well you two.

Love your posts, we are spending 5 days in Amsterdam in June before biking to Bruges. Looks like some warm up rides may be warranted. BTW, have just been looking at some airbnb accommodation in Chania and noted a comment from Lisbeth.

    • We love biking in the Netherlands. The Dutch have a lot to teach and the world has a lot to learn from them about biking. The county has been planned to accommodate bicycles, and, as you know, young and old, rich and poor, boys and girls, men and women all bike. Beth especially likes that it’s flat, although us cyclists would welcome some steep climbs and downhills. Shifting now to Crete, Chania is now a favorite destination for us, and we can recommend the AirBnB where we stayed in the old town. As we mentioned in an earlier post, we could walk to everything, the food was tasty and affordable, and the weather can’t be beat.

It looks wonderful, & of course bike is the best way to explore your surroundings in the Netherlands. Loved your comment about being passed by two “even more elderly” women — I know the feeling…

Tell us what you think, please.
